Keeping Your Neighborhood Safe

Radar trailerOne of the more frequent concerns residents bring to ACHD's attention relates to speeding motor vehicles in their neighborhood.

ACHD has performed numerous speed studies in residential areas and found in many cases, excessive speeding stems mostly from drivers who live in the neighborhood. By simply raising awareness of the issue, drivers in the neighborhood may adjust their driving and decrease their speeds.

Using traffic speed studies and guidelines, ACHD staff works closely with the neighborhoods in determining the best courses of action for safety and to help resolve neighborhood traffic concerns.

Residential Traffic Calming Process

ACHD's Commission adopted the most recent residential speed management policy on December 11, 2024.

Residents may contact ACHD via phone or through the ACHD Connect online portal to request residential speed management consideration. Once the request is submitted, staff will begin a traffic investigation by performing the following tasks:

  • Determine initial eligibility
  • Complete a traffic safety review
  • Investigate traffic volumes and speed thresholds
  • Conduct a neighborhood survey

If the street meets the requirements and the neighborhood survey shows enough support, ACHD will design and schedule residential speed management installation.
