July 2025 Update

The Ada County Highway District (ACHD) has secured $18.4 million in federal funding through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s BUILD grant program to construct four major multimodal transportation projects in Boise’s Central Bench. This is the largest grant in ACHD history and builds on a prior $5 million planning grant awarded in 2023.

The projects will improve over 5 miles of roadway, addressing long-standing needs with:

  • Road maintenance
  • Sidewalk and curb ramp upgrades for accessibility
  • Safer pedestrian crossings and bike facilities
  • Green stormwater improvements
  • Enhanced transit stops

Construction will take place on segments of Allumbaugh, Franklin, Irving, Phillippi, and Malad Streets. The work is part of the Build the Boise Bench initiative, a collaborative effort between ACHD, the City of Boise, Valley Regional Transit, and neighborhood groups.

JANUARY 2025

In January 2025, ACHD submitted a BUILD Grant application to the U.S. Department of Transportation for the Access to Opportunity: Building the Boise Bench Construction Project. This application seeks funding for four key projects located in the West Bench and Central Bench neighborhoods that will expand mobility options, improve safety for all road users, and help address barriers that limit transportation today.

ACHD believes that the transportation projects within the Access to Opportunity Construction Project grant application will meet the goals of the BUILD program by eliminating transportation barriers, expanding mobility options, and improving connections to economic and educational opportunities in Ada County.

If approved, the improvements for each of the four identified locations would provide the residents living and working in these communities with the opportunity to use active and public transportation options to gain new access to employment, schools, healthcare, daycare, healthy food, shopping, and recreation. Additionally, it would help to create united communities.
