How Does a Pothole Form?
Potholes are more common in spring because throughout the winter, melting snow and ice seep into the pavement, then freeze and expand, causing gaps to form. Once the ice melts, the fractured pavement cannot support the weight of passing cars, causing potholes.
How is a Pothole Repaired?
Potholes are filled by first cleaning out the pothole with brooms and compressed air. Tac oil is then applied to the bottom and edges of the pothole which helps the new asphalt adhere to the hole and the surrounding area. Asphalt is placed into the hole and raked to an even finish. Then, the surface is compacted by plate tampers and rollers to level out the new material to the roadway. There you have it - a patched road!
Pothole Days
March 31-April 4
Pothole Days are an ideal time to repair the potholes that formed over the winter. Patches are able to hold better during this time of year where most winter weather is behind us and hot mix plants are open. Plus, tackling the potholes now is important before our crews focus on Chip Sealing in the summer. But fret not, potholes are repaired all year round. So report potholes anytime! Once reported, our crews do their best to repair them by the end of the next business day.
Be sure to include the direction of travel and nearby cross streets or landmarks so our crews can find them!
