Home MenuChip Seal
Chip seal is a common method used to maintain and repair the surface of asphalt roads. Over time, asphalt naturally deteriorates due to exposure to weather conditions such as sun, rain, snow, and the effects of everyday traffic. The chip seal process involves applying a thin layer of liquid asphalt, followed by a layer of aggregate, which can help address surface damage and enhance the road's durability. While chip seal is not a replacement for full paving, it can potentially extend the life of a road by several years and improve skid resistance, helping to maintain safer roads in a cost-effective manner.
The chip seal program typically begins after Memorial Day weekend, depending on weather conditions, with road preparations starting in early spring.
Where is ACHD chip sealing this year?
ACHD endeavors to complete the chip seal process on collectors and arterials every seven years, while residential roadways are on a fourteen-year rotation. Our pavement preservation team continuously monitors pavement conditions on all roadways, especially those that are unable to be chipped on the regular schedule.
Impact on On-Street Parking. During each phase of the chip sealing process, on-street parking may be temporarily restricted. "No Parking" signs will be placed in impacted areas, typically indicating that crews will be working in the vicinity within 24 to 48 hours. We ask for your patience and cooperation during this time as crews work to improve the roadways.
