Construction Update July 22, 2021: Recently, ACHD temporarily closed the Gowen Road Bridge to ensure the safety of the traveling public. After observations during the temporary closure, ACHD has made the decision to keep the bridged closed. The highway district estimates the bridge will re-open by the end of December.

ACHD began a project earlier this year to widen and replace the bridge while widening Gowen Road from Exchange Street to Eisenman Road to four lanes. As part of that effort, a temporary shoring was put in place to facilitate the bridge construction. While the bridge was originally intended to remain open during the project, it was determined that the existing embankment could not adequately or safely be shored and could pose safety concerns.

ACHD would like to thank the public, area businesses, and the Gowen Air Force Base for their continued patience as needed road improvements are completed.

Construction Update July 6, 2021: As ACHD reviews safety concerns, Gowen Road, between Eisenman Road and Exchange Street will be closed starting Tuesday, July 6th as crews continue to replace the existing bridge. The road will re-open as soon as possible.

Construction Update June 21, 2021: The contractor is working on the east side. Temporary paving will start June 21st. Temporary pavement markings will start June 23rd. K Rail is being installed June 25th. Milling will begin once the temporary asphalt is complete.

Construction Update June 11, 2021: Suez work is complete. Electrical work is ongoing. Received Right of Entry permit from Railroad. Project will start June 14th.

Construction Update May 11, 2021: Suez is working on their services. There is ongoing electrical work. Work cannot continue until the Right of Entry permit is approved by the Railroad.

Construction Update April 22, 2021: The temporary paving is being modified to accommodate heavier traffic. There are ongoing utility relocations.

Phase 1 of construction began March 1st. During phase 1 the contractor will place temporary asphalt along the westbound travel lanes. The additional asphalt will provide space needed to shift traffic and allow the road to stay open during construction. Utility relocations also began this week and will continue throughout construction. There will be lane restrictions and flagging as part of this work.

Phase 2: After the temporary asphalt has been placed there will a traffic swap and the contractor will begin work on the east side of the bridge and Gowen Road.

There are several projects in the Gowen Road and Pleasant Valley area. To learn more check out this map.

During Construction You can Expect:

  • Lane restrictions with flagging
  • General construction noise and dust
  • Equipment back-up alarms

Construction expected to begin March 2021. A preconstruction conference is scheduled for February 18th.
