ADA COUNTY — The Ada County Highway District continues to respond to localized roadway flooding and other roadway hazards after last night's heavy rain and hail storm.
ACHD crewmembers have been actively responding to reports across the county using multiple Vactor trucks and other equipment, with employees working outside of normal business hours to address storm-related issues such as mudslides, localized flooding, and downed trees.
Residents are reminded that, since these conditions are occurring outside of regular business hours, reports should be made to Ada County Dispatch's non-emergency line at (208) 377-6790. Dispatchers will communicate with ACHD's on-call crews to respond.
The area received a large amount of rain in a short period of time. As a result, water reached roadways faster than the storm drain system could move it. Canals have also risen because of the storm. Until water levels go down, some water may remain on roadways until it can move into canals or the storm drain system.
Because the storm impacted communities throughout Ada County, crews may need to prioritize the most urgent hazards first. ACHD appreciates the public's patience as crews respond where they are needed most.
While residents are encouraged to check storm drains and make sure they are clear, ACHD urges residents not to remove the grates. Although clearing debris around a storm drain can help water flow, removing the grate creates a serious safety hazard, particularly when standing water hides the opening.
Those traveling are encouraged to use caution and follow these safety tips:
- Never drive over a flooded roadway. Standing water can be deeper than it appears and may cover roadway damage or debris.
- Slow down when driving in heavy rain to reduce the risk of hydroplaning, and increase following distance to allow for longer stopping times.
- Use headlights during rainy or low-visibility conditions to remain visible to other drivers.
- People walking and biking should wear bright or reflective clothing to increase visibility.
- Never walk, ride, or play in standing water. It may be deeper than it appears and could conceal hazards.
ACHD crews will continue to monitor the weather and respond to roadway issues as they arise.
